Tackling dangerous mining – BBC interview with Daniel Litvin

The director of Critical Resource on the day the Chilean miners finally emerge from their underground ordeal.

Feeling the pressure?

Interviewed by the BBC World Service, Daniel Litvin argues that the saga of the 33 Chilean miners highlights the importance of further raising industry-wide safety standards as companies race to meet the growing global appetite for natural resources.

Deaths from mining have fallen significantly in many countries in recent decades. However, dangers persist, particularly in poorly regulated regions and particularly in small-scale mining. Larger firms too need to ensure that, amid intensifying production pressures, safety standards and practices on the ground are ratcheted up further.
